ClearPlay and VidAngel alternatives: every streaming filter, compared
Four services and a handful of browser extensions all promise to take the swearing out of streaming. They differ on what they filter, which services they reach, and, most of all, on whether you keep watching in your own app.*
The short version
ClearPlay and VidAngel use human-edited filter files to mute or skip language, violence, nudity, and more. You watch in VidAngel’s own app, or, for ClearPlay, in a Chrome tab on a computer — it has no TV app at all, and it only filters ad-free plans. Enjoy Movies Your Way does the same across the most services, from a phone or a Roku, and casts to the TV. CleanCut filters language only, from subtitles, but does it inside the streaming app already on your Apple TV, with your own subscription and remote, and is free on YouTube and Plex. None of them filters Netflix or Max inside those apps on an Apple TV.

CleanCut also covers Crunchyroll, Tubi, and AMC+, and any other app that uses the Apple TV’s built-in player. VidAngel does not filter content from Disney, Fox, or Warner Bros. under the agreements that followed its 2020 settlement, which is why Disney+, Hulu, and Max are missing from its column.

Free browser extensions and open-source tools
- Skipit (Free). A Chrome extension that skips nudity, sex, and gore on Netflix using community timestamps. Netflix only, Chrome on a computer only, and it does not mute audio, so language is untouched.
- Stream Clean and Vulguard (Free). Browser extensions (Chrome and Firefox respectively) that read a stream's closed captions and mute when a flagged word appears. Only in a desktop browser. Nothing for the streaming app on a TV.
- VideoSkip (Free, open source). A browser tool that applies user-editable skip files to a video, using IMDb's Parents Guide categories. Desktop browser only; you build or find the skip file yourself.
- Advanced Profanity Filter (Free). A Safari extension and iOS app that mutes profanity from captions on websites viewed in Safari. Only for video playing in the browser, not in an app on a TV.
Where CleanCut fits
CleanCut is the one option on this page that does not move you out of your own app. It runs on an iPhone or iPad, pairs with your Apple TV, reads what the TV reports as playing, matches a subtitle file, and mutes the TV at each flagged line. It filters language and YouTube sponsor segments. It does not filter violence or nudity, because it reads dialogue rather than the picture, and it cannot filter Netflix or Max, because their players report nothing. What is the best alternative to ClearPlay or VidAngel for Apple TV?
If you want to keep watching in the streaming apps already on your Apple TV, with your own subscriptions and remote, CleanCut is the only option that works that way; it filters language and YouTube sponsor segments, not violence or nudity. If you need visual scenes filtered, VidAngel does that in its own app and ClearPlay in a Chrome tab on a computer.
Which streaming filters work with Disney+ and Hulu?
ClearPlay covers Disney+, but only on the ad-free plan and only in Chrome on a computer, and it does not cover Hulu. VidAngel covers neither: its agreements following the 2020 settlement mean it does not filter Disney-owned content. Enjoy Movies Your Way covers both through its own player. CleanCut covers both, inside the apps themselves, on any plan including the ad-supported ones.
Is there a free profanity filter for streaming?
CleanCut is free on YouTube and Plex. Browser extensions like Stream Clean, Vulguard, and Skipit are free but only work in a desktop browser, not in the app on a TV. Enjoy Movies Your Way has a limited free plan.
Can any of these filter Netflix on an Apple TV?
Not inside the Netflix app on the box: Netflix uses its own player there and reports nothing. ClearPlay, VidAngel, and Enjoy filter Netflix by playing it through their own player or a browser instead, which is a different way of watching.
